TSC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Nancy Macharia stated that the move is intended to ensure a balanced distribution of educators across the country.

Macharia explained that the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in elementary and junior secondary schools (JSSs) had an influence on personnel levels.

The elimination of two classes (Standards 7 and 8) in elementary schools has greatly reduced the demand for teachers at that level.

“We continue to assess our procedures and staffing levels at both the elementary and secondary levels to ensure that teachers are allocated evenly across the country.

We take note, for example, that the deployment of CBC in our elementary and junior schools has shifted personnel levels,” she said.

Deployment of over 18000 teachers

Primary school classrooms have been decreased by two (Standards 7 and 8).

As a result, the teacher requirement in elementary schools has been drastically decreased, resulting in an excess of 18,194 staff.“The Commission will redistribute all of these teachers to schools so that all institutions have balanced and lower teacher-to-learner ratios,” Macharia added.

The TSC CEO also addressed the staffing issue in junior secondary schools, noting a 42,117 teacher shortage at the Grade 8 level due to the increase of one class in 2024.
