However, the parliamentary committee is exploring lowering the required retirement age from 60 to 55 to provide young people a chance to work in the public sector.
On Thursday, August 3, the National Assembly’s Labour Committee, while reviewing the Public Service Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2023, said that it will present an amendment to the proposed legislation to cap the retirement age at 55.

Legislators take on retirement age
Kangundo MP Fabian Muli stated that if the committee intends to serve the interests of the youth, it should make additional revisions to the Bill to lower the retirement age.
“We need to think further and reduce the age to 55 to make the youth of this country proud,” stated Mr. Muli.He stated that if the committee did not consider the age reduction proposal, he would present it on his own.
Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga stated that the committee must change the relevant legal rules regarding the retirement age.
“We need to get to know how the 60 years retirement age was arrived at so that we can amend those provisions,” Mr. Chonga told reporters.
Lunga Lunga MP Mangale Munga, although supporting the reduction of the retirement age, stated that there is a need to accommodate the increase of young people.
“Why sixty years? It should be made 55 years old to make room for the younger generation. “That is a proposal;
it may be popular or unpopular, but that is what I believe,” Mr Munga stated.

Conclusion
If the measures are approved, the majority of federal servants who are slated to retire in the next five years would leave earlier,
which will have far-reaching consequences, including burdening a government that is already struggling financially with a higher pension expense.
As the government struggled to keep up with a mounting pension bill, the mandatory retirement age was raised from 55 to 60 years old in 2009. TSC teachers retirement age
