He further stated that the grade 9 exams will help learners determine which pathway they will enter even as they enter into senior School in grade 10.

“At Grade 12, the assessment will be for both placement and certification. But that of Grade 9 is purely transition.

You are moving from one level to the next and you are all aware we are on 100 per cent transition,” he said.

Learners in grade 9 will have a chance to choose from the three pathways once they transition to Senior School.

These pathways include;

  1. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
  2. Social Sciences commonly known as humanities
  3. Performing arts, music and athletics

The PS said this while attending the stakeholders meeting at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) where he officiated the stakeholders meeting on senior School and Teacher Education.

The Principal Secretary further stated the the grade 9 assessments will be both formative and summative.

“We shall have an assessment which is both formative and summative. Just like we have had KPSEA for Grade 6 which is both formative and summative, the same will be in Grade 9,” he said.

The summative assessments for grade 9 will comprise of 60% of the final score in accordance to the recommendations by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms.

The remaining 40%will be contributed from the grade 7&8 formative assessment where each grade will contribute 20%.

Belio Kipsang further said the essence of the grade 9 assessment is to ensure that no student is left out from transitioning to Senior School.

“It is just preparing our kids for the next level,” the PS said.

The PS stated that its only at grade 12 where the assessment will be basically for placement and certification.

“After Grade 12 you will get a certificate which will prepare you either to progress to the next level or make you move to start a certain aspect of life like going into the police force,” Belio said.

Going by the recommendations by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms, it had proposed the the summative assessment at grade 12 should comprise 70% while the school assessment contribute 30%.

The only assessment that will be used to place learners in a different institution is the one at grade 12.

The PS further denied claims that grade 9 will be domiciled in secondary schools maintaining that the class will be domiciled in primary schools as earlier stated.

“93 per cent of Kenyans decided through the PWERE that we are domiciling Junior Schools in Primary schools and we shall live as per the expectations of Kenyans.

There is no window to change what 93 per cent of Kenyans already decided,” he said.
