Allowances are updated to reflect the most recent Job Group (Grade) following a TSC promotion.
TSC provides teachers with a variety of allowance alternatives.

TSC allowances are established by a variety of factors, including the workstation, each teacher’s job grade, tasks, and the types of children they work with.
While most allowances are paid every month, others are not. An explanation of the many kinds of allowances that TSC pays is provided below.
Paying stipends
There are two types of remunerative allowances;
- Automatic
- Those paid upon application
Automatic allowances include:
House
Medical (No longer paid to teachers; deducted and paid directly to Minet insurance and another is given to the NHIF)
- Commuter
- Hardship
- Leave allowance
- House Allowance
House allowance is paid on a monthly basis to all teachers. It is paid on two criteria; Job grade and workstation.
Teachers in higher job groups earn a higher house allowance than those in lower cadres.
Allowance for Responsibility
Head teachers, deputy head teachers, and senior teachers at Job Group K and lower are compensated for this
allowance for special duties
Teachers in job group M or lower who are assigned by the commission to administrative positions in arid or semi-arid regions are eligible to receive this.
Allowance for readers
This is paid to a visually impaired teacher who has engaged a reader whose minimum qualification is not below KCSE D+/KCE Division III.
The allowance is paid at a fixed rate determined from time to time by the commission
Also called facilitation or aid allowance, the reader’s allowance is paid at a rate of Sh15,000 per month to blind teachers and those confined to wheelchairs by virtue of their disability.
Interpreters Allowance
This is payable to deaf teachers who engage interpreters while on study leave.
Special school allowance –
This is paid to teachers specializing in special needs education and who have been deployed to teach in special schools or units.
Transfer Allowance
This is payable to teachers who have been transferred from one workstation to another, provided the transfer is initiated by the Commission.
It is equivalent to a teacher’s basic pay for one month.
Allowable Expenses
Teachers are reimbursed by the commission for the following costs.
Travel costs:Only under the following conditions can the teacher be reimbursed:
where the interdiction of a teacher has been lifted.
While en route to an interview
going to a station outside of one’s home district for the first time on posting
retiring from a duty location outside of one’s home District During school breaks, teachers who work in underprivileged communities travel back and forth from their homes.
The teacher must reside outside of the area designated as a hardship. Teachers applying should fill up the required paperwork and send in supporting documentation.
The daily quote
This is a daily stipend for subsistence that educators receive when working on official projects.
The application needs to be submitted at least 14 days ahead of the trip.
